Every game with a store has a way to hand out something for free, and almost
every one of them does it the same way: a short string you type somewhere,
once, that turns into a reward. That is a redeem code. It is also the most
copied, least checked genre of page on the gaming internet, which is why the
first result for " codes" so often gives you five codes that died in
spring.
This is how codes actually work, why lists go dead, and how the
all-games codes page is built so that a code you find there is one
we saw working.
Website codes. Entered on the publisher's redemption page after signing
in — Genshin's gift page, Roblox's promo page, Riot's redeem site. Usually
tied to a livestream or a patch, usually alive for a day or two, occasionally
permanent (Genshin's GENSHINGIFT has worked since launch).
In-game codes. Typed inside the game — a settings field, a present icon,
a promo menu. Roblox experiences work this way, and so does Rocket League: no
website redeems them, and a list that sends you to one is wrong by
construction. Fortnite added a third variant this season, a lobby "Admin
Panel" that takes codes the website refuses — we wrote it up separately.
Creator and invite codes. World of Tanks invite codes, RAID's champion
codes, Steam creator drops. They look like ordinary codes and are not: an
invite code works only while creating a new account or within days of it,
and RAID lets a new account redeem exactly one champion code in its first 72
hours. Lists that mix them into the general pile produce the most "why
doesn't this work" of any category — the RAID version of that story
is the clearest example.
Event-page codes. Redeemed inside a specific in-game event screen, not in
the general menu. PUBG Mobile's collab batches work this way; when the event
ends, the codes end with it, whatever a list says.
Account-link promos. Not codes at all, but they solve the same problem:
link an Epic account to LEGO or to MyDisney and the reward arrives with no
string to type. For Fortnite these are the only things that reliably work
between collabs.
Copying. Most code pages are assembled from other code pages. A code that
died on Tuesday survives on the copies for months, because nobody at the
copy ever redeemed it. This is why the same dead Standoff 2 list has been
"active" on a dozen sites for two years.
Quotas. Many codes stop after a fixed number of redemptions — Free Fire's
after 500, Mobile Legends' diamond codes after a cap the publisher never
states. The code is technically valid and practically gone, and a list that
checks validity by looking at the string cannot tell.
Region and platform. A code issued for the Asian server returns "invalid"
in Europe. A Wargaming code for EU does nothing on NA. The list is not wrong,
it is incomplete — and the person reading it cannot know which.
Currency you could otherwise buy. Roblox has never issued a Robux code; Epic
has never issued a V-Bucks code; Psyonix has never issued a Credits code;
Riot has never issued an RP code. Publishers give cosmetics, boosts, resources
and small bundles, because a code for the thing they sell is a discount they
did not choose. Every list promising "free Robux codes" or "1000 V-Bucks code"
is either recycling a fake or fishing for your login.
That second case is the real risk in this genre. A redemption page asks you
to sign in on the publisher's own domain and never asks for a password inside
the game or on a third-party site. A "code generator" that wants your
credentials is the scam; the code was the bait.
The codes page is one registry behind every game's page, and the
rules are the same for all of them:
- Status comes from the game's wiki where one keeps a status column —
Honkai's records the whole history with an expiry on every code; Genshin's
only tracks recent ones, so absence there means "not known", not "dead".
Where no wiki exists we use several independent trackers and ignore any
single one.
- A disputed code is a dead code. If sources disagree, the code moves to
the expired block. A list that says "working" and is wrong costs you more
than a code we left out.
- Dead codes are shown struck through, not deleted. You came from a page
that promised a code; seeing it crossed out answers the question a blank
would not.
- Every game's list carries the date it was last checked, and that date
moves only after a real reconciliation — never with a cosmetic edit.
- Rewards are quoted from the source that reported them. A class of
reward without a number ("in-game item bundle") is honest; an invented
number is not.
Eighteen games live under those rules today, from Genshin
and Honkai: Star Rail to Blox Fruits,
World of Tanks and Escape from Tarkov.

and League of Legends — exist to say that no honest
list is possible for that game right now, and why. That page is worth more
than a fake list, and it is the one competitors do not write.
Codes are the top of the funnel for the same reason a bought account is the
bottom of it: both are ways past a grind. A code gives you a cosmetic or a
boost for free, once. An account gives you everything a previous player
earned, at a price. When the codes for your game run out — and they do, most
months — the catalogue is where the rest of it lives, and every
codes page links to its game's shelf only when that shelf has stock.
