Three ways to end up playing a Steam game you do not own today: buy it, buy
an account that already has it, or borrow it through Steam Families. Each is
the right answer for someone. The mistake is picking one by price alone, so
here is the comparison with the price left in and everything else added back.
On our shelf, read live as you open this page, Steam accounts price by the
size of the library like this:
A single new release costs $60 to $70 at full price. Put the middle row next to
that: one new release, give or take, for a library of dozens of games. Put the
bottom row next to it: about two new releases for a library you would not
finish in a decade.
That is the entire case for buying an account, and it is a real one. But the
number needs two footnotes before it means anything.
First, the count is not the product. Fifty games in a library are often
fifty bundle leftovers and free weekends. The accounts that cost real money on
our shelf are priced on a handful of titles that still sell at full price —
the dearest account of all holds twenty-one games, and what it actually holds
is Rust and CS2 Prime. If you are buying for one game, the question is
whether that game is in the library, not how long the library is.
Second, you are not buying the games, you are buying the login they are
attached to — and that is where the other two options come back in.
Ownership that nobody can contest. A game bought on your own account is
yours under Steam's rules. A game on a bought account is on an account whose
original owner can, in principle, prove they created it — with the first
email, the first receipt, an old CD key — and Valve's support restores
accounts to whoever proves that. Full access with the account's mailbox
included closes the live routes back in, and it is the thing to insist on;
the paper trail is what you cannot close.
Your region, your payment methods. A bought account belongs to the
country of its store, and that country decides prices, currency and which
cards Steam accepts. If the store is one you cannot pay in, you own a library
you can play but a store you cannot use. Your own account has none of this.
Your friends, your history, your badges. A second account is a second
identity. Some people want exactly that; most people who just want to play a
game do not.
No inherited bans. A VAC ban is per game and permanent, a trade ban is a
trade ban, and both follow the account. Every card on our shelf shows the
status, but the point stands: on your own account, the only bans are ones you
earn.
The price, when the library matches what you want. Covered above.
A played history. For some games that is the product. A Rust account with
hours on it looks like a player's account to servers that gate on playtime.
A CS2 account with Prime and a profile behind it queues differently from a
fresh one. A Dota 2 account with a calibrated rating and a high behavior
score is a starting position, not a download. In every one of those cases
the account is worth more than the game because of what was done on it, and
that cannot be bought in the store at any price. It is why Rust
accounts and old accounts are shelves of
their own.
A second account, deliberately. Playing a game you also own on your main,
on a separate login — for a fresh start, for a different region's servers,
for keeping your main's rating out of it. That is a legitimate reason and an
account is the only way to do it.
A way back after a ban. If a game bans per account and you were banned,
buying the game again on the same account changes nothing. A second account
is the route, and the market prices it that way.
Steam Families — Valve's replacement for the old Family Sharing, live since
2024 — lets up to six people share their libraries with each other. Anyone in
the family can play a game another member owns, with save games and
achievements kept separately per person. The conditions are the ones that
matter:
- One copy, one player at a time. If the owner is playing that game, you
wait. If they are playing a different game, the shared copy is free.
- Same household in practice. Valve ties families to a region and to
living together; a family assembled from strangers across borders is not
what the feature is for, and it enforces that.
- Not every game is shareable. Publishers can opt out, and some do; games
with their own launchers or accounts often are not shared.
- Bans in shared games land on the owner. A VAC ban earned on a shared
copy hits the account that owns the game. That is a reason people are
careful about whom they share with.
If the person who owns the game is in your household, this is the answer:
free, legitimate, no second login. It is not the answer for a played history,
for a second account, or for a game whose owner plays it at the same hours
you would.

- You want one game, and you own a Steam account. Buy the game, or borrow
it if someone in your household has it. An account is the wrong tool.
- You want a library, and the price of an account with it is a fraction of
the games. Buy the account — for the names on it, not the count — and take
the mailbox with it. Check the store region first.
- You want what was done on the account: hours, Prime, a rating, a clean
second start. Buy the account. There is no other way to have that.
- Someone in your household owns the game. Steam Families, and keep the
money.
