Origin was EA's PC launcher for a decade, and people still call the account
by its name. That is fair — nothing about the account changed when the
launcher did. But the confusion around the rename hides a more useful
question, which is what an EA account actually contains, and the answer is
less obvious than it looks.
In late 2022 EA replaced Origin on Windows with the EA app, and later did the
same on Mac. The account underneath — the email, the EA ID, the friends list,
the library, the purchase history — is the same account. If you had an Origin
account, you have an EA account; the login works in the new client, and every
game you owned is still owned.
So «Origin account» and «EA account» are one thing with two names. Listings
and searches still use both, and on our EA shelf the older
listings say Origin in the title for exactly that reason.
This is the part that matters if you are buying one. An EA account's library
shows every game the account is entitled to, but the entitlements come from
different places and they do not all behave the same way:
- Games bought in the EA app (or Origin). These are the account's own.
They install and play through the EA app with nothing else required.
- Games bought on Steam. EA's games on Steam link to the EA account and
appear in its library, but the entitlement lives on the Steam account that
bought it. Launching one needs that Steam login. An EA account listing that
shows a Steam-bought game is describing something the buyer only gets if
the Steam login comes with it.
- Games bought on PlayStation or Xbox. Same principle: the entitlement
belongs to the console profile linked to the EA account, and plays there.
A library with twenty games can therefore be twenty games you can play on the
EA app, or five you can play and fifteen tied to a Steam or console login
that is not part of the deal. The card should say where each came from; if it
does not, the linked accounts list on the card is the next best clue.
An EA account links to one Steam account, one PlayStation Network profile and
one Xbox profile. EA allows unlinking, with restrictions — cooldowns, and some
links that cannot be undone once progress has been shared through them. For
a bought account this means the platform links on the card are close to
permanent: an account linked to a stranger's PlayStation is an account that
plays its console games only under that stranger's profile.
EA Play, the subscription, is on the account too: whatever time is left on it
transfers, and it expires on its own.

Most of the shelf is Battlefield accounts, and nearly all of those are
Battlefield 3, 4 and 1 era libraries — games that are now around a decade old,
bundled, discounted to a few euros on sale or free through EA Play. The account
market prices them accordingly: on our shelf a Battlefield library and a
dollar are about the same thing. The number of games on the account has no
relationship with its price at all: a library of forty old titles is worth
what one old title is worth, which is very little.
The exception is the game people still buy today. Accounts naming a current FC
hold a median several times the shelf's; accounts with a played Apex profile
are priced partly as Apex accounts and live on the Apex
shelf when the rank is real. The lesson for a buyer is the
same as for a seller: an EA account is worth the one current game on it,
and the title is where that game is named.
- Which game you want, and whether it is in the title. Not the count.
- Where that game was bought. EA app: yours. Steam or console: only with
that login, and the card says whether it is included.
- The linked platforms. Treat them as permanent.
- The country. The account's store country decides prices and payment
methods, and EA does not let it move freely.
- The mailbox. EA restores accounts to whoever holds the earliest
purchase receipts, and EA also acts on transfers it notices — more
actively than most publishers. Full access with the email included is the
part you control.
Then, in the first ten minutes: password, email, EA login verification,
unlink what is not yours, and open the EA app to walk the library against the
title before confirming the order.
The EA shelf shows the game count, the country and the linked
platforms read from the account data, with the game names in every title.
