The first ranked games of a season that decide an account's starting rank.

Placements are where an unranked account's hidden rating becomes a visible rank. Buyers of unranked accounts either play them themselves or order a placement boost; sellers of boosting list placements as a game count rather than a rank, because the result depends on the games. A listing that says "placements unplayed" means the buyer decides the account's future.
