Ask «why won't Epic Games let me log in» and you get a list of a dozen error
codes. A list of five causes is more useful, because almost every code comes
down to one of them. And behind the causes is one thing that explains the
recovery, the unlinking and the price of an account on our shelf alike: an
Epic account is an email and what is linked to it.
| what you see | what it really is | what to do |
|---|
| «Wrong email or password» | You are logging into the wrong account: Fortnite on a console created a separate Epic account under the PlayStation / Xbox / Nintendo login, with a different email | Sign in through the platform you played on and read the email in the account settings |
| It asks for a code and no code arrives | Two-factor authentication: the code goes to the email, an authenticator app or SMS — whichever was set up | Check spam and the second method; if you have no access to them, recover — do not keep retrying |
| «Account temporarily locked» | Too many wrong attempts in a row — protection against guessing | Wait and reset the password through the email rather than keep guessing |
| «Account disabled» | A block on Epic's side: a rules violation, a chargeback, a disputed purchase | Support only; a bought account with that history is the seller's problem, not yours |
| It logs in through one platform but not another | The platform is not linked to this Epic account, or is linked to a different one | The Linked accounts page: see what is linked, then the unlinking section below |
A case of its own is «how do I find my Epic Games account». It is the first
row of the table: someone who played through a console for years signed in
with the platform button and never saw their Epic email. It exists, and the
account page shows it after a sign-in through the same platform.
Epic has two roads back into an account, and no third.
The first is the email. «Forgot password» sends a link to the account's
address; if the address is yours, you are in within a minute. Two-factor
authentication is recovered the same way — through the email and the backup
codes, if you saved them.
The second is support with proof of ownership. Without the email, Epic asks
you to prove the account is yours: creation date, payment details and
transaction numbers, linked platforms, devices. The account goes to whoever
proves the original registration — and that is this article's key word
for a buyer, below.
A console, Steam, Google or Apple is linked to an Epic account on the
Linked accounts page, and unlinked there too. But unlinking has a rule that
breaks plans more often than login errors do: after unlinking, a
restriction lands on the platform account, and it cannot be linked to a
different Epic account until the restriction is removed. You can remove it
yourself — but once every 365 days, and support does not bypass the
rule. Steam is the same: it can be unlinked once every 365 days.
In practice: if your PlayStation is already linked to some Epic account, it
can be linked to a new one only after the restriction is removed — and if
you removed it this year, only next year.
The three things above fold into one rule.
- The email is the account. A bought account is yours exactly as far as
its email is yours. A listing where the email is not handed over is an
account with two owners, and recovery goes to whoever proves the original
registration. That is not you.
- Linked platforms are doors. Every linked console or Steam is a way
into the account without a password. The Linked accounts page is the first
thing to open after a purchase: unlink everything that is not yours.
- Your own console, with a caveat. If you want to play a bought account
from your own console and it is already linked to your old Epic account,
remove the restriction first (once a year) and only then link. Plan that
before the purchase, not after.
Our Epic Games shelf is licences and libraries: one paid game on a fresh
login, or years of claimed giveaways. Why the first is priced like a game
and the second an order of magnitude above it is the subject of
how much an Epic Games account is worth.
Here one thing matters: what is handed over. The «full access» row is the
listings where the email goes to the buyer; anything else is a rental with
no end date.
- Sign in with the email you were handed, change the password, switch
two-factor authentication to your own authenticator and save the backup
codes.
- Open Linked accounts and unlink everything that is not yours: consoles,
Steam, the seller's social logins.
- Check the account email and the backup email — they must be yours alone.
- Only then confirm the order. Until you do, the money is with us and not
with the seller.
The slices carry their own live medians:
And when you are ready — sell your Epic Games account:
escrow holds the payment until the buyer confirms the account opens and the
email has become theirs.
The table on this page is read from our live catalogue when the page
loads, not written into the text — the shelf moves, and so do the numbers.
The login, recovery and unlinking rules follow Epic's help pages at the time
of writing; the linking restriction is lifted once every 365 days and is not
bypassed by support.
