Steam — Frequently Asked Questions

Anything these answers miss, Live Chat picks up — human, around the clock.

Is it legal to buy a Steam account?

Two different questions. Between you and the seller it is an ordinary private agreement, and no consumer has been prosecuted for it. Between you and Valve it breaks the Subscriber Agreement, which means the account — not you — carries the risk. The practical answer is full access with the email included, so the previous owner cannot take it back.

Can I change the region of a Steam account after buying it?

Only with a payment method issued in the new country, and Valve limits how often the region can move. Treat the region on the card as fixed and pick the account whose store matches how you intend to pay.

What is a limited Steam account?

One on which less than five dollars has ever been spent. It cannot use the market, trade or send friend invites. Any real purchase lifts the limit — the card states the status so you know before paying.

Why can't I trade right after taking the account over?

Because you replaced the mobile authenticator. Valve puts a fifteen-day hold on trading and market use after that change on every account, bought or not. It expires on its own.

What counts as an old Steam account?

The market's own word for accounts registered ten or more years ago, with the years-of-service badges that go with it. Age adds trust and a higher median, but the library still decides the price — an old empty account is just an old login.

Are Turkish or Argentine Steam accounts cheaper to play on?

Less than they were. Valve moved those regions to US-dollar pricing in 2023, so the regional discount is mostly gone, and a store region you cannot pay in is a liability rather than a bargain. Check the region on the card against how you will pay.

Can Valve give the account back to the previous owner?

Yes, if that person proves they created it — original email, first receipts, old keys. Changing the email, password and authenticator in the first ten minutes removes the live routes back in; the paper trail is why full access matters more on Steam than almost anywhere else.

Most secure marketplace to buy Steam accounts

Every listing carries the full locker upfront, checkout runs inside the platform, and credentials land in your dashboard the moment payment confirms. Nothing is arranged with the seller off-site.

Two kinds of listing live on this page. Unique account is one exact account from a verified seller — you see what you buy. Random account and named come from the house pool: the guaranteed part is stated, the rest is chance.

The library, first and by a wide margin. Not the raw count of games but what they are: a handful of full-price titles that still sell at full price is worth more than fifty bundle leftovers, and the card shows both the count and the names so you can tell the two apart. Free-to-play games on the account add nothing on their own — CS2 and Dota 2 are on every second account because they cost nothing to add.

Age, second. An account registered more than a decade ago carries years-of-service badges that no amount of spending can recreate, and a long, clean history is exactly what a stranger's recovery claim struggles against. Old accounts hold a higher median on this shelf, but age alone does not set a ceiling: a fifteen-year-old profile with an empty library is still an empty library.

Inventory and level, third. Tradable items — CS2 skins, Dota 2 cosmetics, TF2 hats — are money that leaves with the account, and the level reflects badges the previous owner crafted. Both move individual prices, neither moves the shelf as a whole.

Two things buyers pay attention to that are not value at all: the store region, which decides which currency and payment methods the account accepts, and the account's status — limited, trade-restricted or banned — which decides what it can do at all. Both are stated on the card because both change what the same library is worth to you.

Region first. Every account belongs to the country of its store, and that country decides prices, currency and which cards or wallets Steam will take from you. Changing it is possible only with a payment method from the new country, so treat the region on the card as permanent unless you already have the means to move it.

Then the status. A limited account is one on which less than five dollars has ever been spent: it cannot send friend invites, use the market or trade, and the limit lifts only after a real purchase. A trade ban or a market restriction is different — those are consequences, and they are written on the card as such. A VAC ban is permanent, tied to the game it was issued in, and never worth the discount.

Third, the library against what you actually want to play. The count is a headline; the names are the product. If one game is the reason you are buying, use the filter for it rather than reading a hundred titles — Rust, CS2, Dota 2 and PUBG each have their own switch on this shelf.

Fourth, the years and the level, which tell you how the account was lived in. And access last but never optional: the mailbox on the account is what turns a login into ownership, and every card says whether it is included.

What is on the card, and how much it really changes
On the accountWhat it gives youHow replaceable it is

The Steam Subscriber Agreement forbids selling an account or charging anyone for the use of it, and Valve does not make exceptions. In practice enforcement is quiet: Valve does not hunt transferred accounts, and the real risk is a recovery claim. Support restores an account to whoever can prove they created it — the original email, the earliest purchase receipts, old CD keys — and those proofs stay with the person who first paid.

That is why full access is the thing to insist on here more than anywhere. With the mailbox you change the email, the password and the authenticator, and the previous owner's paper trail is the only claim left; without it you hold an account somebody else can document better than you.

Two Steam-specific things to expect rather than fear. Changing the mobile authenticator puts a fifteen-day hold on trading and the market — that is Valve protecting the account, not a defect. And a game bought with a card that later charged back can be removed from the library by Valve, so an unusually cheap account with expensive recent purchases deserves a second look.

Change the password, then move the email to your own, then set up Steam Guard on your phone — in that order, because each step closes a door the previous owner could still use. Steam will ask you to remove the old authenticator; do it and accept the trade hold that follows.

Then deauthorise every other device, check the login history and the family-sharing list for machines you do not recognise, and confirm the store country on the account matches the card. Compare the library with the listing while the confirmation window is open — that is the window in which the seller's money is still frozen.

In this exact order
  1. 1Change the password
  2. 2Move the account email to yours
  3. 3Add your own Steam Guard authenticator
  4. 4Deauthorise all other devices and check family sharing
  5. 5Compare the library, region and status with the card

Listing is free and the commission applies on the sale. What sells a Steam account is the library named plainly: the paid titles, the year the account was registered, its level, the store region, whether it is limited and whether it carries any ban or trade restriction. Buyers on this shelf read the names, not the count, so a short honest list beats a large vague number — and an account with its mailbox included sells faster than the same library without it.
