The rank on the card is not the rank you will play at. What hidden matchmaking rating is, why it follows the previous owner, and how many games it takes to settle.
A Valorant account belongs to the region it was created in; Riot moves it only to where you actually live, at the cost of the current ranked act, and ranked queues are region-locked. You buy a Gold account, play five games, lose four. The account was not misdescribed and you did not suddenly get worse. What happened is that you inherited someone else's hidden rating along with their rank.
The rank is a label. The matchmaking rating behind it is what decides who you play against, and it is invisible from the outside — including from the listing.
They usually match. They stop matching in exactly the case that concerns anyone buying an account: when the previous owner was climbing, or falling, at the moment they stopped playing.
Neither is a defect. Both are invisible on any marketplace, ours included, because the number is not exposed by the game.
Two things stack in the same direction.
The account plays at its old level, you do not. Even at equal skill, you do not know this account: the champion pool it owns, the rune pages set up on it, the sensitivity. That is worth a couple of losses on its own.
Your first games weigh more. Matchmaking updates fastest when it has least information about you as this account's new owner. That cuts both ways — a bad start moves you down quickly, and a good one moves you up just as quickly.
The practical consequence: the first five to ten games decide where the account settles, and playing them tired, or on a champion you do not know, costs more than it would on your main.
That last point is why unranked smurfs usually cost more than accounts with a rank attached, even though the rank looks like the more valuable thing. You are paying for the absence of someone else's history.
Rank is the most visible number on a listing and rarely the most useful one. What you are actually buying is a starting point, not a destination.
